E-Commerce – Online Shopping – Shopping Baskets
We just have to conclude that even with the difficult times we all face in 2009, things still look pretty good for Internet sales, which has an inherent lower cost and wider reach than the high street.
I wrote in January 2008 that the trend of increase showed no sign of abating, and from 1994 to 2005, Internet shopping grew at an average rate of 34% with a staggering jump of 50% between 2004 and 2005. In June 2007, the UK office of fair trading established that the UK Internet shopping market was worth £21.4bn and in 2006 over 20 million people shopped online.
In our own experience it is the lower priced products that sell best, let us say up to £100, but it is with great interest that I write that out of those 20 million, 6.6 million spent in excess of £1,000, which in itself demonstrates a growing confidence in Internet shopping.
Within a report carried out by Cushman & Wakefield (and reported in the Financial Time late 2006) retailers forecast that the proportion of their sales from the Web would increase from 4.5 to 14.7 per cent by 2016 with some expecting the Internet to account for more than 50 per cent of sales. Indeed, in 2007 John Lewis reported that its website accounted for more revenue than any of its shops and as much revenue as its flagship Oxford Street branch.
The point of all this is that statistics or no statistics, you would have to be living on the planet Zob not to see the huge potential of selling products online although it is essential that the needs of the search engines are considered in the structure, programming and navigation of the website or shopping basket - after all, if no-one can find your site, they can’t buy from your shop!
The team at Web On High have vast experience in every aspect of online shopping, from the aesthetics of design, technicalities of programming, intricacies of search engine promotion and understanding of usability (how your customers experience the site) and for these reasons and more are better placed than most to help you.
